31 Days to Sell Your Home: Day 5 – Ooh, That Smell!
🚫👃 What Buyers Smell Before They See
Listen, we all have smells in our homes, but we’re used to them – buyers are not. And the wrong one can tank a showing in the first five seconds.
Pet odors, old cooking smells, damp basements, or an overuse of air fresheners all set off alarm bells. Buyers want a clean slate, not a sensory assault.
Why It Matters
Scent is tied directly to emotion. A pleasant, neutral smell says “this home has been cared for.” A strong odor — even if it’s just too much Glade — can trigger thoughts of hidden issues: mold, pets, smoke, or neglect.
It’s one of the easiest things to fix… and one of the fastest to derail a sale.
Quick Wins for a Fresh First Impression
- Deep clean litter boxes, carpets, and fabrics
- Take trash out daily — especially before showings
- Open windows for at least 15 minutes before buyers arrive
- Avoid heavy perfumes or plug-ins — aim for fresh, not fragranced
- Simmer citrus or bake something mild like vanilla or oatmeal cookies (but don’t overdo it!)
If your house has a distinct smell, fix the source — don’t just cover it up.
👉 One Action to Take Today:
Ask a trusted (and honest) friend to walk in and take a deep breath. (Or ask your realtor)
Can they smell pets? Mustiness? Last night’s dinner?
Their nose knows. Listen to it.
